An elderly man in a yellow jacket and matching hat stands outdoors near stone steps and a railing, with grassy hills and a blue sky in the background.

About

This Day Dawning - a celebration of the life and work of Hull poet Maurice Rutherford.

"I was born on Albert Avenue in 1922 and that's about all there is to it."

This was often Maurice's typically modest response when asked to talk about his life. He died peacefully in his sleep on October 3, 2025 at the august age of 103 and in this new show we celebrate his life and works over the course of six collections of poetry and two collections of prose. "This Day Dawning" is not intended as an In Memoriam event but rather a joyful occasion with poetry, music, laughter and song. So please come and share it with us.

The cast will include:
Barrie Rutter OBE…Actor-Manager, Director.
Eliza Carthy MBE…Folk singer/ songwriter, musician.
Dean Wilson….the charmer, the poet from Withernsea.
Martin Barrass….Actor.

We joined him for his 100th birthday and return to celebrate his life alongside -

Jeannie Clarke (daughter)… artist and musician
Phil Curry (son-in-law)… musician
Jed Grimes, folk singer/musician
Alan Young (aka Serious Child)…. Singer/songwriter
